Thursday 22nd March 2018

Today our volunteers were busy clearing more brambles from around the base of trees across the park, whilst leaving some brambles for wildlife. This work will help stop the brambles spreading into the canopy of the trees and help the trees maintain a better health.

A small flock of goldfinch were flitting about, a chrysalis was found on a branch of willow and the first frog spawn on the park was found in one of the SUDS ponds on the park.

Thursday 22nd February 2018

Today our volunteers were busy removing sprawling brambles from various trees in the park. Some trees on site are being choked by brambles climbing up into their canopies, so removing these brambles will help the trees continue to stay strong.

Robins, wrens, blackbirds, woodpigeon, mallards, moorhens and more were enjoying the occasional sunshine on the park.

The volunteers were hard at work this week, clearing around a dry pond where rhubarb and gunnera had been previously planted. Some of the rhubarb and gunnera plants were located and were still growing. This clearance work will greatly help the growth of the rhubarb and gunnera.

In addition to their clearance work, the volunteers carried out a litter pick along the stream.

Our hardy volunteers battled the icy winds to clear out the SUDs outlet pipes across the park and to cut down self-set ash saplings growing in areas of the park.

Six stock dove were seen in the park, along with a flock of goldfinch feeding on seeds from the dead wildflowers. Dunnock, wren and robins were also present.

Our fantastic volunteers made it to the end of the stream this week! Now the clearance is complete there is a massive difference to the appearance of the stream and it has greatly helped create more diversity to the habitat on the bank. They also uncovered many trees along the way that were being choked out by the brambles and other vegetation, so this will help the trees!

Goldfinch were calling in the trees, fish were hiding away in the vegetation in the ponds but most the wildlife was hiding from the high winds and showers!

Our hardworking volunteers, restarted efforts to clear back vegetation along the far end of the stream. All their hard work will help to keep the stream clear and open for much longer. This will enable wildlife to make use of the stream and will also greatly improve the quality of the stream.

We saw song thrush flying about in the park, heard robins were singing and had fish swimming in the stream. It is always lovely to see the diversity of wildlife in our park.

Despite the pouring rain our fantastic Thursday volunteers completed a large scale litter pick of the park. We collected lots of rubbish which had accumulated and this helped greatly to contribute to the continuing efforts of Green Estate staff to keep litter to a minimum on the site.

Much of the parks wildlife was hiding away due to the heavy rain! It was definitely weather for ducks, with the ducks on the pond enjoying a good bath!

This week our volunteers were working hard to complete the clearance of the bank at the bottom end of the stream. Once work was complete on clearing the bank, attention moved to removing pond weed, watercress and other plants that were taking over the water course. Care was taken to ensure that some vegetation was left for the stickleback and frogs to hide away from predators!
